Christmas markets: a feast for the senses

Christmas markets are the heart of Christmas in Switzerland. In every city and town, squares and streets are filled with twinkling lights, delicate decorations and an irresistible aroma of mulled wine and spices.

Zurich: Its Christkindlimarkt, located at the central train station, is one of the largest in Europe, with a giant Christmas tree decorated with Swarovski crystals. Here you will find more than 150 stalls with handicrafts, decorations and culinary delights. Don't miss the "Singing Christmas Tree", a choir that sings Christmas carols from a tree-shaped platform.

Basel: Its Christmas market, considered one of the most beautiful in Switzerland, extends through Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, with a magical and welcoming atmosphere. Admire the elaborate decorations, the wooden houses decorated with lights and enjoy Christmas music concerts.

Bern: The Christmas market at Waisenhausplatz will transport you to a dream world with its handicrafts, wooden toys and culinary delights. You can also enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride and admire the giant nativity scene.

Montreux: On the shores of Lake Geneva, "Montreux Noël" will enchant you with its spectacular lighting, festive atmosphere and variety of Christmas products. Visit the "Village des Lutins", a magical village with workshops for children and a craft market.

Christmas delicacies: a pleasure for the palate

Swiss gastronomy shines at Christmas with a variety of dishes and sweets that will make your mouth water.

Christmas cookies (Guetzli): You can't miss the delicious "Mailänderli" (butter cookies with icing), "Chräbeli" (aniseed cookies) and "Zimtsterne" (cinnamon stars), cookies with shapes and flavors that will captivate you. Baking cookies is a very popular family tradition in Switzerland. (You can also order these delicacies in Costa Rica, made by Chef Sabrina)

Fondue and raclette: These Swiss classics are ideal for sharing with family or friends during the cold winter nights. Cheese fondue, prepared with different types of melted cheese, is enjoyed by dipping bread in it. Raclette consists of melted cheese served with potatoes, pickles and onions.

Hot chocolate: A comforting and delicious drink to enjoy in the Christmas markets or after a day of skiing. Switzerland is famous for its chocolate, so be sure to try a thick and creamy hot chocolate.

Leckerli: A traditional gingerbread from Basel, with a spicy flavor and a soft texture. It is perfect to accompany a cup of tea or coffee.

Christmas traditions: St. Nicolas and more

Switzerland has a rich Christmas tradition with unique customs that will surprise you.

St. Nicolas: On December 6, St. Nicolas visits children, distributing sweets and gifts to those who have behaved well. He is usually accompanied by his helper Schmutzli, a character with a darker appearance who represents the wild man of nature.

Klausjagen: In some regions, "Klausjagen" is celebrated, a tradition in which men dressed as Saint Nicholas walk the streets with bells and whips, scaring away evil spirits. This tradition is especially popular in Küssnacht am Rigi.

Advent: Swiss families light a candle every Sunday of Advent on a wreath of pine branches, as a symbol of waiting for Christmas. It is also common to have an Advent calendar with a small surprise for each day.

Christmas tree: The Christmas tree is traditionally decorated on Christmas Eve and kept until January 6, Epiphany.

Magical places to visit at Christmas:

Grindelwald: This charming village in the Alps offers a dreamy snowy landscape, perfect for enjoying Christmas in a fairytale atmosphere. You can go ice skating, skiing, snowshoeing or simply enjoy the views.
